Sr. Engineering Manager - Automation

Responsible for design review, development oversight, and deployment of SCADA and ICS solutions. This role requires a deep understanding of the technical and operational aspects of control systems, as well as the ability to provide engineering support for complex projects and guide mid and junior-level engineers towards successful outcomes when applicable. Responsible for managing automation systems and performing remote control system troubleshooting and providing support for the meeting. This person will be the local liaison between the Corp Automation Group and the local contacts, potentially being the first point of contact for any automation issues that arise. However, Your most significant role will be in driving and overseeing the strategic implementation and optimization of automation processes across the organization. Your decisions and actions in this area will have a direct impact on the efficiency, productivity, and overall business performance of the organization
II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Review engineering designs to identify automation opportunities and potential integration points. Provide feedback on design concepts to optimize automation potential. Ensure automation requirements are incorporated into engineering design specifications. Monitor engineering design changes and assess their impact on automation systems.
- This position will be responsible for providing Subject Matter Expert (SME) level day-to-day support of all automated and electromechanical process control systems used in landfills, wastewater, biogas extraction, renewable energy, recycling technology, and organics processing.
- Serve as a subject matter expert in SCADA and ICS technologies, offering technical direction and support to project teams, including extensive submittal reviews.
- Must be the final decision maker on control system design, Industrial Automation standards, and process control designs.
- Support Jr. Engineers
- Ensure contractors align with project goals, deliver quality work, and adhere to company standards and timelines. Monitor contractor performance, provide feedback, and address any performance issues.
- Collaborate closely with operations teams to identify automation opportunities, assess feasibility, and prioritize projects. Ensure seamless integration of automation solutions into existing operational workflows.
- Drive the adoption of emerging OT technologies to enhance operational efficiency and reliability. Collaborate with IT and OT teams to ensure alignment and effective system integration.
- Develop and execute a comprehensive automation strategy aligned with business objectives. Identify automation opportunities across various departments and processes.
- Development of Corp Engineering Industrial Automation standards
- Expected results from this position include remote support of automated systems, troubleshooting of automated process equipment and process systems, assisting in the coordination of contractors, execution of site change controls, aiding in the investigation of process deviations, and providing expertise for process evaluation and product improvements for better quality, yields while maintaining the highest level of safety.
- This position will support the highly complex automated systems and equipment installed in new and existing facilities.
- Must provide automation site support interface with operations personnel, compliance, information systems, engineering, and maintenance. Key to this is the thorough documentation of all data collected and stored in shared work environments.
- Must exhibit strong customer communication skills and have technical knowledge of automated and electro-mechanical process control systems and equipment.
- Acts as team lead
III. Supervisory Responsibilities
- Will coach and mentor less-experienced Engineers and act as team leader on more complex projects.
IV. Qualifications
The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the job.
A. Education and Experience
- Education: Bachelors Degree (accredited) in Engineering, or similar area of study.
- Experience: 6 years of relevant work experience (in addition to education requirement) with industrial electrical controls, automation, control systems, instrumentation, and process design
B. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements
- ISA Certified Control Systems Technician® (CCST)® or Certified Automation Professional® (CAP)® preferred, but not required.
C. Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required
- Committed and highly motivated team player with strong communication skills.
- Ability to communicate with stakeholders at all levels in corporate and business unit settings.
- Advanced skills in MS Project (importing and exporting data, setting multiple project baselines, creating custom views and reports, PERT analysis and project tracking).
- Advanced skills in MS Visio (Visio diagrams, creating custom styles and templates, cross functional flow charts, working with data, and custom reports).
- Must live and work in the US.
Preferred Skills
- Knowledge of Rockwell Studio 5000, RSLogix 500, FactoryTalk ME/SE, and Plant PAx, with the ability to interpret, modify, and write new code for process control.
- Knowledge of PanelView, C-more, Maple systems and other HMI development tools.
- Understand communication protocols: Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP/IP, Modbus RTU, HART, ControlNet, and Device Net.
- Knowledge of industrial Networking and Cyber practices
- Understand process engineering & design.
- Interpret P&ID diagrams across various processes.
- Ability to read, understand & interpret electrical, pneumatic & hydraulic schematics.
- Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities
- Knowledge of AC/DC control circuitry
- Experience with VFD’s and motor controls
- Knowledge of National Electric Code (NEC)
- Knowledge of NFPA Codes
- Proficient in MS Office 365 products
- Must possess the ability to work independently and unsupervised.

- This position will require the ability to travel to multiple sites on an as-needed (35%)
- Required to be exposed to physical environment which involves dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes, or similar elements

- Required to be exposed to physical occupational risks (such as cuts, burns, exposure to toxic chemicals, etc.)
The expected base pay range for this position across the U.S. is $_102,500__ - $_$153,525__. This range represents a good faith estimate for this position. The specific salary offered to a successful candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate’s relevant experience, education, training, certifications, qualifications, and work location. In addition, this position is eligible for bonus. Must live and work in the US.
