Your role and responsibilities

Join our team as a Rights of Way Support Officer, where you`ll play a vital role in supporting officers to maintain and protect Suffolk`s cherished outdoor spaces working across the western half of Suffolk. You`ll engage with diverse stakeholders, responding to evolving demands and priorities while actively seeking opportunities to enhance the network and its accessibility. 

Your responsibilities will include managing customer enquiries, fostering positive relationships with landowners and user groups, and maintaining financial systems. As a local champion for public access, you`ll leverage your expertise in Rights of Way law and council policies to provide accurate information and promote outdoor enjoyment. Your keen eye for improvement will contribute to refining our databases and procedures, ultimately helping to shape a more accessible and well-maintained network for all to enjoy.

You will need

  • relevant qualification such as HNC/HND or equivalent level of knowledge and experience 
  • great verbal communication skills and able to deal patiently and fairly with customers and professionals from all backgrounds and all Public Rights of Way knowledge levels
  • experience of managing your own caseload within a team environment
  • the ability to understand and interpret policies, procedures and relevant legislation and effectively communicate them
  • proficiency in the use of GIS and mapping software, MS Word, Excel, Outlook and SharePoint
  • a genuine interest in helping people enjoy the outdoors and Suffolk’s green access network.

The team

The Rights of Way and Access team is part of the Natural and Historic Environment Department. It is a friendly and professional team looking after Suffolk’s Rights of Way and access network. This includes 5,700km of public rights of way, open access and informal routes.  Suffolk County Council’s ‘Suffolk Green Access Strategy 2020-2030 covers the team’s main priorities with the vision “to get more people using and enjoying Suffolk’s green access network.”

The Operations Team sits within Rights of Way and Access, with the specific role of maintaining and protecting the Rights of way network and developing and delivering practical work schemes.

The team is highly motivated with a passion for Suffolk’s natural environment.
